If ChatGPT says your free-offer payment was not approved, check three separate things: your bank’s decision, unfinished payment authentication and the offer’s eligibility rules. That message alone does not tell us which one failed, and no fix guarantees approval.
We checked OpenAI’s official payment and promotion guidance on 18 October 2026. This is a troubleshooting guide, not confirmation that every Indian account has a free Plus trial.
First, confirm that the free offer applies
Open the genuine offer in the ChatGPT account you intend to use. OpenAI’s promotion rules say some campaigns are only for people who have never subscribed to Plus. Other restrictions can involve your region, payment method, a previous promotion or an expired code.
If the offer takes you to checkout, read the amount due now before confirming. A promised free trial should show the expected zero charge in the currency displayed, such as ₹0 for an INR checkout. Also read the trial duration, later renewal amount and renewal date.
If the expected discount is missing, stop. OpenAI explicitly says not to complete that purchase. Contact the partner that issued the offer or official support instead. A full-price subscription is not a reliable route to getting a free offer applied afterwards. Some offers apply without checkout; in that case, check your updated plan after the confirmation.
If your bank declined the payment
OpenAI’s card-decline guidance says to check the entered card details, expiry and billing address, including the postal code. Do that only on the genuine payment page. Make sure the account has sufficient funds.
Banks may block online or international transactions. Ask your bank whether it declined this attempt and whether the card supports the required online, recurring or international transaction. OpenAI says it usually does not receive detailed decline reasons from banks, so support cannot necessarily explain the bank’s decision.
OpenAI also requires the purchase location and card’s issuing region to be supported. Do not change your stated location to bypass an eligibility restriction. If the card is not supported, consider another payment method that the actual checkout offers.
If authentication did not finish
An authentication failure is not the same as a confirmed promotion rejection. The bank may require a 3D Secure prompt, an OTP or approval in its own app. OpenAI lists errors such as “authentication required” and “3D Secure attempt failed” in its payment guidance.
Allow the genuine checkout’s pop-ups and redirects. If blockers interfere, adjust them for that checkout. OpenAI suggests a private browsing window or a different browser, device or network when authentication fails. Complete the bank’s own approval without closing or refreshing checkout.
If the prompt never appears or repeatedly fails, ask your bank about 3D Secure approval. Do not send us, a forum commenter or an offer reseller your card number, CVC, password or OTP. Only enter payment and authentication details in the relevant official payment or bank flow.
If the promotion says you are not eligible
Changing cards will not necessarily change campaign eligibility. Check whether you previously subscribed, used a similar promotion, received an expired code or followed an offer intended for another region. OpenAI says these can cause eligibility errors.
Use the issuing partner’s genuine link and the intended account. OpenAI does not reissue promotional codes; requests for another code belong with the partner that supplied it. If you believe the eligibility error is wrong, contact official support through help.openai.com.
For a support request, note the error wording, when it happened and which offer you opened. Redact payment details and personal information from screenshots. A screenshot can document the missing discount without publishing your financial information.
The catch
A failed attempt does not mean every possible later charge is cancelled. OpenAI’s promotion guidance warns that failed payments may be retried later. Check your subscription and payment status before making repeated attempts or assuming there can be no charge.
Most Plus promotions renew at the standard monthly rate when the benefit ends. OpenAI advises cancellation at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid an unwanted charge. Free promotional access may end immediately on cancellation, so read your specific campaign’s terms before cancelling early.
One easily missed detail: the prepaid-card exclusion on the card-decline page is explicitly about buying API credits. It is not evidence that every prepaid card is banned for every ChatGPT subscription promotion. Your offer and checkout still decide which payment methods qualify.
Our take
Check the displayed trial price first, then the bank and authentication steps. Treat promotion eligibility as a separate question. We would stop at a wrong checkout amount rather than pay and hope, and contact the bank when the evidence points to a bank decline. No troubleshooting page can approve your payment or promise the offer will appear.
Frequently asked questions
Why does a free ChatGPT offer say payment was not approved?
The message alone does not establish the cause. OpenAI documents bank declines, incomplete authentication and card or regional restrictions; promotion rules add separate eligibility limits. Check the official offer and payment flow rather than assuming all failures mean the same thing.
Should I pay if the ChatGPT free trial does not show ₹0?
Do not complete checkout if it does not show the promised trial or discount in its displayed currency. OpenAI says to contact the issuing partner or support when the expected promotional price is missing.
Will trying another card guarantee approval?
No. Another supported method may help with a card-specific problem, but it does not remove account, region, expiry or previous-promotion restrictions. Your bank may also require authentication.
Can a failed ChatGPT payment be retried later?
Yes. OpenAI’s promotion guidance warns of later payment retries. Review your subscription and payment status rather than treating a failed attempt as confirmation that a subscription was cancelled.
