A media headline is not proof that your account qualifies for a free month. We are not treating a reported account-specific offer as a confirmed India-wide campaign. OpenAI’s official promotion rules explain how genuine promotions apply, but do not themselves announce a universal Indian free trial.
If an offer appears in your account, read its duration, eligible plan, amount due now and paid renewal terms. Only proceed if the official confirmation or checkout shows the promised benefit. If it does not appear, do not pay the full subscription price expecting the promotion to arrive later.
ChatGPT Free is not ChatGPT Plus
The official ChatGPT pricing page says the free version is available to everyone and lists Plus among the paid plans. You do not need to buy Plus simply to start using ChatGPT.
OpenAI’s Free Tier FAQ says Plus has higher rate limits. That is the useful distinction: Free is a plan with its own allowances, not a permanently free Plus subscription under another name.
Check the current comparison before paying for a particular model or tool. Access and limits change. A feature appearing in Free does not mean every Plus feature or allowance is included.
What does Plus cost for an Indian account?
The official ChatGPT pricing page, checked in a browser on 18 October 2026, lists Plus at ₹1,999 per month and Free at ₹0. This is the public INR list price, not a signed-in checkout verification. Check your purchase screen for the final tax treatment, amount due and paid renewal amount. OpenAI’s Plus help page also quotes US$20 per month, billed monthly; that dollar reference is secondary to the public India price.
The official multi-currency billing guidance lists INR among supported web billing currencies and distinguishes web purchases from subscriptions bought through Apple or Google. App-store subscriptions are managed by that store and charged in local currency. For the actual India charge, read the currency, tax treatment, amount due and renewal amount on your own purchase screen. If it bills in dollars, your bank’s currency conversion and any applicable fees can change the rupee debit.
Plus also does not include API usage. OpenAI says API billing is separate. A Plus trial is therefore not a promise of free API credits for your app.
Can an Indian student claim free Plus?
A student email address alone does not establish eligibility for free Plus. OpenAI’s promotion rules say to check the particular campaign’s eligibility criteria. We could not retrieve the older student-offer help page during this revision, so we are not using it to state dates, location rules or a current entitlement for Indian students.
How to check a real free Plus promotion
OpenAI’s Plus promotion and referral rules explain that some campaigns are only for people who have never subscribed to Plus. Other conditions can depend on the partner, region or payment method. Generic promotion documentation does not prove a particular India campaign is running.
If you receive an offer, use this checklist:
- Read the named campaign’s dates, region rules and eligible plan. A different ChatGPT plan is not Plus.
- Follow the issuing partner’s genuine offer link and sign in with the intended ChatGPT account.
- Confirm that the checkout shows the promised free period or discount before completing the purchase. If the offer applies without checkout, confirm the updated plan after the confirmation message.
- Save the renewal date, paid renewal amount and cancellation instructions.
OpenAI says not to complete a checkout that does not show the expected promotional price. Contact the issuing partner or official support instead. Do not assume a full-price charge will later become a free trial.
The catch
Most Plus promotions automatically renew at the standard monthly rate after the offer ends. OpenAI advises cancellation at least 24 hours before renewal to avoid an unwanted charge. Cancel through the platform where the subscription started: web, Apple or Google.
Free promotional access may end immediately when cancelled. Read the individual campaign rules before cancelling early. A used code generally cannot be reused, and resubscribing does not restore the original promotional price.
Codes can also expire or be restricted to their intended recipient. OpenAI’s rules prohibit selling or transferring them. A reseller’s cheap shared login is not the same thing as an official free Plus entitlement.
Our take
Start with ChatGPT Free if your budget is ₹0. Move to Plus only when its current allowances solve a real limit for you, or when an official offer clearly confirms your eligibility and the price. We would not add a payment method on the strength of an old student headline or a generic promo-code page.
